Baby God

Baby God is a partly unsatisfying documentary about the crimes of Dr Quincy Fortier, who for more than 30 years as a fertility doctor, unknowingly to his patients, was using his own sperm to get them pregnant.

After the initial discovery, the documentary doesn’t have all that many places to go. It follows a number of people affected by his behavior, all wondering why he did it and how it affected their life. It partially answers or posits a reason for why he did it. The latter question leads to the most interesting discussions within the film e.g. one woman asking who wants to say that their dad was a monster?

It all feels like there is a lot of padding to stretch it to something nearing feature length – it is 78 minutes long, so still on the short side. It could still have had a good bit edited out. It all feels like a bit of a missed opportunity.
